A plain-language guide to the phrase, the four field types behind it, and what an instrument can and cannot tell you.
Non-native EMF is the term used in building biology for man-made electromagnetic fields, the ones that did not exist in the environment humans evolved in. The earth has always had a static magnetic field and natural light; a home built today adds RF from wireless devices, AC magnetic fields from current flow, AC electric fields from energized wiring, and dirty electricity from modern electronics. Those four are what the phrase covers, and all four are measurable with calibrated instruments. FieldWise measures each one room by room across Fort Collins and Northern Colorado, and throughout Colorado and Wyoming, compares the readings against precautionary Building Biology SBM-2015 guidelines, and delivers a written report with room-by-room scores and prioritized, practical reduction steps.
The Four Types
RF covers wireless: Wi-Fi, cell, Bluetooth and smart meters, measured as power density. AC magnetic fields come from current flow through wiring, panels and appliances, measured in milligauss, and they pass through walls. AC electric fields come from voltage on energized wiring even when nothing is running, measured in volts per meter, and matter most around the bed. Dirty electricity is high-frequency switching noise riding the wiring itself.
They are four different measurements with four different fixes, which is why an assessment treats them separately rather than as one number. All of them are non-ionizing; none of this is the physics of X-rays, and copy that blurs that line is selling fear, not measurement.
The Honest Frame
Many people arrive at this term after noticing a pattern, sleep that differs between rooms, or a space that feels different than the rest of the house. The honest starting point is the one FieldWise works from: notice the pattern, measure the location, and let the reading say what is present. FieldWise does not diagnose conditions or promise outcomes. We measure your invisible environment and give you practical, prioritized ways to lower exposure. What happens next in your body is yours to observe.
The Method
An assessment walks the home with four instruments: a Safe and Sound Pro 2 for RF, a Gigahertz Solutions NFA1000 for AC magnetic and electric fields, a TriField EM100 for dirty electricity, and a UPRTek MK350S Premium spectrometer for lighting. Sleeping areas get the most attention, because proximity for hours at a time is what makes a reading meaningful.
The goal is not elimination, but intentional optimization. Most findings resolve with placement, distance and a handful of targeted changes, documented in priority order so the two changes that matter come before the ten that do not.
Questions
No. Everything FieldWise measures, RF signals, power frequency fields, and electrical noise, is non-ionizing, meaning it doesn’t carry enough energy to damage DNA the way X-rays or nuclear radiation can. Non-native EMF simply means man-made electromagnetic signals your body didn’t evolve with, unlike the Earth’s natural magnetic field and sunlight. That’s why FieldWise uses terms like RF exposure and field levels instead of radiation, since that word invites comparisons that don’t apply here.
Not in an inhabited modern home, and elimination is not the goal. Measurement shows which sources dominate and which practical steps, mostly distance, placement and timing, lower exposure where it counts, starting with where you sleep.
The Foundational Assessment at $850 covers RF, AC magnetic, AC electric and dirty electricity plus your lighting, in 2 to 3 hours in your home.
