FieldWise EMF Consulting tests homes and apartments in Boulder, Colorado, for wireless RF, AC magnetic and electric fields, dirty electricity and lighting. More than half of Boulder’s homes were built before 1980, so the wiring gets a close look. Founder Cameron Castaneda takes every reading in person and compares it against Building Biology SBM-2015 guidelines. Most Boulder homes start with the Foundational Assessment, $850, which includes a written room by room report and an action plan call.

Boulder Specifics

What Is Different About Measuring a Boulder Home?

Boulder’s homes are older than most along the northern Front Range. According to the US Census Bureau, 55.4 percent of Boulder’s housing was built before 1980, against 30.6 percent in Fort Collins, and 18.3 percent dates from before 1960. The city also has 10 historic districts and more than 225 individual landmarks.

Age matters because wiring errors live in wiring that has been extended, repaired and rewired over decades. When current returns along a different path from the one it went out on, the two no longer cancel, and the result is an AC magnetic field in milligauss (mG) that passes straight through walls. A room-by-room reading finds where it is, and an electrician can usually correct it once it is located. Our page on wiring errors in older homes explains how that works.

Your Meter Belongs to Xcel

Fort Collins runs its own city electric utility. Boulder is served by Xcel Energy, and Xcel describes its Colorado smart meters as connecting to its systems over a wireless network. Xcel also offers Colorado customers a non-communicating meter, for a trip charge and a monthly fee. A reading at the meter and in the room behind it shows how much that one source contributes before you decide anything.

Apartments and Shared Walls

43 percent of Boulder’s homes sit in buildings with five or more units, against 28.8 percent in Fort Collins (US Census Bureau). In a condo or an apartment near campus, a good part of the RF in a bedroom often arrives from the neighbors’ routers through a shared wall or floor. Measuring separates what you can change from what you can only move away from.

Buried Lines, Sidewalk Antennas

About 60 percent of Boulder’s power lines are already underground, according to the city, so the magnetic fields inside a Boulder home more often come from the panel, the service entry and the wiring than from a line along the street. The city also notes that new small cell wireless facilities typically go on new poles on sidewalks, which is why a street-facing bedroom is measured on its own. If your Boulder home sits near a transmission line, substation or transformer, the 24 Hour Infrastructure Assessment logs magnetic fields for a full day and night, because those fields rise and fall with how much power the neighborhood is using.

Client Reviews

What Do FieldWise Clients Say?

“We had a great experience with Cameron at FieldWise EMF Consulting! He came to our home and did an incredibly thorough evaluation of the EMFs in our environment—including our wireless devices, lighting, and nearby towers and antennas. He then helped us determine how to best arrange our sleeping area to minimize our EMF exposure. Cameron was knowledgeable, thorough, and great at explaining what he was finding and what changes would make the biggest difference. So worth the investment—we highly recommend him!”

Carl and Kimberley M. Five-star Google review, September 2026.

“I had an EMF and lighting assessment done in our home and it was honestly eye-opening. There were things in our house affecting sleep and overall well-being that I never would have thought about. Everything was explained in a really down-to-earth way and I walked away with simple changes we could make.”

Common Questions

What Do Boulder Homeowners Ask About EMF Testing?

How much does EMF testing cost in Boulder?

Most Boulder homes start with the Foundational Assessment, $850. It measures all four types of EMF (wireless signals, magnetic fields, electric fields and dirty electricity) plus your lighting, and includes a written room by room report, a prioritized action plan and an action plan call. If your home is near a power line, substation or transformer, the 24 Hour Infrastructure Assessment, $1,450, logs your home for a full day and night. Lighting only? The Home Light Reset is $350. Buying a home? The Pre-Purchase Inspection is $500. Step 1 for every option is a free 15 minute call to confirm the right fit for your address.

Can you test an apartment or condo in Boulder?

Yes. An apartment is measured the same way as a house, room by room, and the report notes which readings come from sources inside the unit and which arrive through shared walls and floors, because the steps you can take are different for each.

Should I swap my Xcel smart meter for a non-communicating one?

That is your decision, and a measurement makes it an informed one. Readings at the meter and in the rooms behind it show how much of your home’s RF comes from the meter compared with sources inside, such as your router. Xcel Energy explains the non-communicating option and its charges on its smart meter page, and our smart meter EMF guide covers what is measured.

Can you assess a Boulder home before we purchase it?

Yes. The Pre-Purchase EMF Inspection, $500, fits inside your inspection period. In about 2 hours it measures wireless signals, magnetic and electric fields, dirty electricity, wiring and grounding problems, any solar equipment, and nearby power lines, transformers and cell sites. Your written report arrives in less than 3 days and sorts every finding into easy fixes, bigger fixes (with a rough cost range) and findings that come with the property. We go through it together on a call before your deadline. In an older Boulder house, it is also the first look at how the wiring behaves. Book as early in your inspection window as you can.

Is EMF testing a medical or diagnostic service?

No. We make no medical claims and cannot diagnose or treat any condition. We measure what is present in your home, compare it against precautionary Building Biology SBM-2015 guidelines, and give you practical, prioritized reduction steps.
